Hey Everyone!

Sara and I are super excited to be apart of another effort to raise money for the people of Haiti. We joined up with Crafts for a Cause who are auctioning off amazing items all custom made by artists! The money will be donated to Artists for Peace and Justice. Check out our contribution, information on the Crafts for A Cause Auction and Artists for Peace and Justice here: craftsforacause.tumblr.com/

Sara and I have donated 2 pairs of our custom shoes from Macbeth that we took an afternoon in New Orleans to paint and personalize. The auction starts the 15th of March at 8am EST at biddingforgood.com/craftsforacause

friends!

Having such a lovely time on this tour in the USA. It feels strange to think that I was bundled up in my parka and winter boots less than a week ago in DC. Especially as I sit here in Atlanta nursing the awful sunburn I got in Boca Raton yesterday. The miracle of touring!

I started having a panic attack last night thinking about the inevitable END of this tour. I attribute much of this premature anxiety to my ever growing affection for STEEL TRAIN and HOLLY MIRANDA. A tour can be defined by the company you keep during the long days before and after shows and we’ve truly lucked out because every single member of both bands are sweet hearts. I look forward to their sets each night, and have so enjoyed the summer camp atmosphere back stage!

Check out Holly Miranda’s amazing coverage in the new york times! So proud proud proud!!!!! http://www.nytimes.com/2010/02/21/arts/music/21miranda.html?ref=music

The crowds have been terrific at every show, and I’d like to specifically thank the folks in Richmond, VA and Boca Raton for their ENTHUSIASM. I have a flow chart of sorts that is always projecting on the inside of my brain that ranks each show and crowd. Last night, Boca Raton, became a front runner after the SECOND leopard print bra landed on stage. Its one thing to get a bra, its really something all together different to receive TWO animal print bras during one set. Seriously, thank you fans of Florida! Both shows were such a treat.

One last link: I’ve FINALLY committed to a book club of sorts. I promise to keep sending updates if the kind folks at teganandsara.org don’t let me fall off the commitment train. http://forum.teganandsara.org/topic.php?id=18

festival season is upon us! there isn’t really a time these days where there are no festivals, so the term festival season really isn’t valid, however here i am using it as i announce one of several festivals we are sure to be playing this year.

this one is nice and special as its close to home for tegan, well not really that close, but a whole lot of our canadian friends sure like to make the trip each year. SO, we are happy to let you know that we are joining the great canadian migration to george, wa on the memorial day long weekend (not to be confused with the victoria day long weekend in canada, which is a whole different weekend altogether) for the sasquatch festival! we are playing on the second day, sunday, may 30th, so you have one day to get ready and one day to cool down. ticket and camping info is at their website www.sasquatchfestival.com!

bookworms!

sometimes you approach me on the street, sometimes in line buying socks at H&M, occasionally you catch up to me next to the strange hat embroidery kiosk at the eaton centre in montreal…but you all request the same information! what am i reading you wonder!? often i feel unprepared to answer, perhaps a title or two pop into my brain, but often i walk away feeling like i’ve disappointed you!

so, as promised, here is a partial-incomplete-spontaneous list of what i can remember reading this past year!

this is my best attempt to list my favorite reads (or attempted reads) that occurred between the sun tanning in central park months of july-september 2009 and the cross atlantic flights and tree trimming months of october 2009- january 2010!

THE BOOK OF LAUGHTER AND FORGETTING- MILAN KUNDERA…while you’re at it…consider IMMORTALITY!

LIKEWISE- ARIEL SCHRAG…this I read while nursing a terrific hangover in New York in August. I wept and laughed out loud. Should be a mandatory read in high school.

EVERYTHING RAVAGED, EVERYTHING BURNED, WELLS TOWER

Re-Read ATMOSPHERIC DISTURBANCES, RIVKA GALCHEN…page 31, page 50, page 51…sneaks up on you. so pretty and strange.

GQ magazine, January 2010…I didn’t exactly READ the article on Rihanna…mostly I appreciated the photos…as art. Right!?

INTIMACY, JEAN-PAUL SARTRE

A MOVEABLE FEAST, ERNEST HEMINGWAY…Thank you Laura Clendening.

BY GRAND CENTRAL STATION I SAT DOWN AND WEPT, ELIZABETH SMART.

THE CITY AND THE PILLAR, GORE VIDAL

ASTERIOS POLYP, DAVID MAZZUCCHELLI

THE BEST AMERICAN NONREQUIRED READING 2009…I look forward to the new collection every year! THE BEST AMERICAN COMICS is also a gem.

SLOW MAN, also, DIARY OF A BAD YEAR, J. M COETZEE…absolutely loved both of these books.

Chapters of JOAN DIDION’S POLITICAL FICTIONS and countless inspired writing from my much loved subscriptions to NEW YORKER MAGAZINE and BELIEVER MAGAZINE!

There were others, but I’ve scattered and abandoned my books between home landing pads and friends bookshelves…and I have a terrible memory…

To the kind hearted bookworms who gave me I SEE/YOU MEAN, THE MAN WITHOUT QUALITIES, BARNEY’S VERSION and many dozens of other literary gifts…thank you!!!

keep reading the real thing,

friends in the land down under!

we’re thrilled to announce our upcoming tour details for Australia! Festivals! Headline shows! The best espresso in the world! Kangaroos! Surfing! Intense jet lag!

The last time we made the trek across the ocean to visit you, it was in January 2009. The trip was paced in such a relaxed way that everyone felt as though they were on vacation. I was very sick the entire trip and I spent much of the tour-cation watching the band and crew run around on the beach swatting flies and squealing about jelly fish from the comfort of my air conditioned bungalow. i would use the word frolic to describe the skipping and jumping done on the beaches during our many days off. Band and crew bodies clad in lycra, skin glistening with spf 100, I realized that a tour-cation in iceland would be more MY style…but I am in the minority. All the sun-burning and swimming enhanced the group’s Australian experience and we can’t wait to return (boardies and rashies in tow) to visit you once again!

We were thrilled to see HELL made it into the triple J top 100 this year! We’re planning to bring our biggest, longest and best show as a gesture of appreciation! Thank you for the continued support Australia!

Sara and I graduated high school in 1998. Our professional career of playing music started shortly thereafter. Touring back then meant Sara and I piling into a friend’s car, or taking the Greyhound bus between cities and shows. We couldn’t afford to tour with a band, so Sara and I and two guitars and a hockey bag of merchandise would head out on the open road alone. Terrifying to imagine now 12 years later. The image in my head makes us seem so young and vulnerable, so unprepared for what was to come. And we were unprepared. Don’t let our resume or stories or track record imply otherwise. Our first show with Neil Young and The Pretenders in the summer of 2000, we stepped on stage for sound check and realized, we wouldn’t be sitting on stools. Neil’s guitar tech rushed in to drill holes for guitar straps and then we were ushered back on stage to sound check to 18,000 empty seats. Unprepared doesn’t actually do it justice, now that I really am thinking about it.

Sometimes memories like the one I just typed out hit me as I’m drifting off to sleep and I feel body tense, I feel my mind start reeling. How did we survive? Why did we continue? Once we drove all the way from Calgary to Guelph (2.5 days of driving) only to have the show get canceled when we arrived. How did we not give up? Why didn’t we give up? Year after year, more tours would come in, more shows would be sold out, more records would sell, more people would offer to work on our behalf and most importantly more fans would be made. Record after record our tours became more fun, more diverse, better sounding, better looking and more populated. Tour after tour left us feeling hopeful and energized. I’d return home from the road happy and proud to be doing what we were doing rather than rejected and burnt out.

Our first cross Canada tour was in the fall of 2000, if my memory serves me correct. It was a small tour when I think back on it now. We were playing to maybe 500 people a night at most. But it was our tour. Our poster that we had designed, our band the headliner, our pockets lined with….well…we were making a living, finally. Sara and I would jump up and down on the hotel room beds each time we returned from a night of making music. I remember calling our agent in the middle of the night after our first sell out. We settled our own shows, sold our own merchandise, played body guard and stage manager for each other. It was hard work but we were willing to do it because we loved making music so much. We’d chosen a path of independence. Opted to sign with an indie label to keep control of our project and to retain some ownership over ourselves and our music. This meant we had a lot of control, but often times, it meant things took longer and took more work.

This summer will mark 12 years of working in this business and making music together professionally. As Canadian artists it is always so special for us to be able to tour in our own country. We’ve been lucky enough to have success all over the world. Being seen as international artists was always at the top of our list when we were setting goals between records early on in our career. But home is home, and Canada is home. This past month has been a dream. We played beautiful, legendary venues across this country to family, friends and fans of all eras. Our band thanks you for your support Canada. Thank you to each and every person who came to the shows and sang along. To all of you who bought posters in support of Haiti we thank you so much. We feel so proud to have such generous and thoughtful fans. Lastly, thank you to those of you who have been with us all these years. We appreciate your support and we are so grateful for it. From the bottom of our hearts to yours,

Thank you,

Tegan (and Sara)
